Shrawan Sankranti is a festival and start day of important month Shrawan. This is also a festival of feasting and merry making. Widely celebrated in Nepal and India specially eastern calture, the festive has its own importance among the subcultures of the greater Hindu inhabitants and treditions.
Shrawan is fourth month of the year according to hindu calendar. In Nepal this month marks the end of paddy planting. The first day of this month is called shrawan sankranti as the first day of all the month is sankranti. This is very important day. On this day, people perform a ritual of "Luto Phalne" in the evening. This ritual is supposed to throw out or to ward off the disease of 'scabies'. They burn some of the selected and important plants (called Kurilo, Valayo, Kukurbedh, panisaro etc.) with wood and throw them away shouting “take away scabies.” This tredition has its own importance. People(specially farmers) perform this ritual for avoid or throw out the disease scabies and other diseases which can be influnced by paddy working.
Generally Shrawan month is considered as the holiest month of the year for Hindus. Each Somvar[1] of this month is a special day in Shiva temples for womens. For women this month is all about Mehendi[2] and green/yellow chura[3]. During this month Hindu women wear red sari[4] with green and yellow chura, pray for the long and prosperous life for their husbands(past, present and future). For married women, along with green/yellow churas on their wrists, they also wear green pote[5] around their necks. It is believed that green glass bangles are worn for fulfilling one’s desires and wishing a happy and prosperous life to families. And for unmarried girls of marriageable age also wear chura in hopes of getting a handsome guy, and for those who already have boyfriends, making them husbands.
